PHYSIQUE ART

In a very real way, every bodybuilder is an artist. . . more specifically a sculptor. And competitive bodybuilders are a great deal like artists who enter their work in "juried shows" or other competitions for prizes, awards and, of course, recognition.

Yet the artistic sculpture of human muscle - revealed in all its magificence at almost impossibly low levels of body fat - is as transitory as last night's pizza and ice cream. It's certainly no wonder then that photographers flock to bodybuilders, both "photo-jounalists" recording the peak conditioning and performance at or around bodybuilding events. . . and "fine art human figure photographers" whose work involves a certain value added as they contribute their own taste, composition, skills and ideas along with careful control of light and shadow.

And these days, more than ever before - because of the wide range of fine tuning, correction, adjustment and even radical or exagerated manipulation of imagery now possible using computers - photographers often continue to apply their creative ideas long after the shoot collaboration.

As have many bodybuilders before him, MuscleChef Dave Nathan has won an enthusiastic group of special fans in the mix of photo-journalists and photographic artists who have found his statuesque frame in their many lenses.

We present here a superb selection of physique photography in thumbnail and slide show presentations. By the way, while many of the figure studies presented here are appropriately classified as nudes, all unclothed work exhibited here is creatively and tastefully posed, shadowed or draped and contains no frontal nudity.
